Extreme weather: The New Normal
For the first time in the history of mankind, the past decade has witnessed unprecedented soaring levels of extreme weather as communities world over struggle to cope with hurricanes, heat waves, and flood-droughts. The events were extremely extreme, category-5 hurricanes, and frequency and intensity make scientists, policymakers, and the public ask questions.
Causes and Consequences:
This is the direct effect of climatic change: extreme weather. Global warming, which is brought about by human actions through fossil fuel burning and forest clearing, changes the atmosphere with a consequence of:
1. Heatwave:
Long periods that are characterized by extreme temperatures, leading to heat sicknesses and deaths.
2. Flooding:
Heavy fall or storm surges flood cities, undermine their infrastructure, displace their populations, and cause destruction.
3. Droughts:
Recurring droughts that destroy crops, damage whole ecosystems and drinking water supplies
4. Tornadoes:
